Hatchi Kita (ハッチ・キタ, Hacchi Kita) is an eighteen year old prodigy, working part-time as a debt collector in an attempt to seek adventure. He pilots the bottom of Hizakuriger.

Background[edit]

Since a very young age, Hatchi had been raised very strictly to make him suitable to become the next king of the Moon. He had to take lessons in kingcraft, and also underwent self-defense training which he can apply in various situations. However, this kind of upbringing meant he was also very lonely as a child. He says himself his parents were never close to him, and it's suggested that even though he has many followers on his social media, he had no real friends until meeting Robby Yarge and Ikku.

Sick of how suffocating his life on the Moon was, he ran from the embassy in Neo-Tokyo when he had to come to Earth for a ceremony, and got a position at Yang's Finance. As it turned out, his disappearance was closely monitored by the Luna Guard much to his disappointment, so he took the first opportunity he had and fled onboard the Nagaya Voyager, choosing a space adventure over the known, boring life of a Moon prince he had until then.

During the main events of the story, Hatchi is often the driving force for excitement of the whole group. His enthusiasm can be contagious even in situations Robby and Ikku would not normally enjoy. He often suggests local attractions to see, and checks ratings on TripSunvisor to make sure his experiences are the best they can be. He quickly becomes accustomed to piloting the bottom part of Hizakuriger after some initial indignation. He and Robby often argue, sometimes only as a friendly banter, which frequently involves mutual jabs at each other's ages; and sometimes about completely ridiculous topics, only annoying Ikku in the process.

Despite disagreeing about some things with Robby, he happily spends time together with him and helps with avoiding Yang who is chasing them despite still technically being Yang's employee. Eventually, he becomes so close-knit to the older man that Hatchi eventually gives up on his freedom just to be able to reach Isekandar together, paying off Robby's debt in the process while being aware this will alert the Luna Guard about his location and force him to return home. Before he has to leave, he accidentally saves the Earth with Robby and Ikku, and becomes famous for this.

After the main story, Hatchi returns to the Moon, but he doesn't seem happy there. He is shown staring at the Earth instead. Eventually, he leaves the Moon, though it is unclear if he's supervised this time around. He finds Ikku then Robby, and chooses to go on another adventure with them instead of living a life of comfort and luxury but boredom.

Appearance[edit]

Hatchi's season one character sheet.

Hatchi has short, white hair with a pink ombre and a gray undercut, and green eyes.

His casual outfit consists of a white button up shirt with a brown vest. Over this, he wears a white jacket with a high collar and an asymmetrical closure. Hatchi has a brown belt with a silver buckle, gray slacks, and black loafers.

Personality[edit]

Though initially appearing rather stuck-up and pretentious, even saying he hates things that are askew, as soon as Hatchi sets out on an adventure and outside of his usual boring bubble he keeps on showing child-like overbearing enthusiasm about almost everything. He discovers new interesting things on every step, and is genuinely happy to have new experiences of any kind, be it positive, like visiting an amusement park for the first time; neutral, such as finding a part-time job; or straight up negative, like being under attack in space. The latter earned him a comment from Ikku that he might be some kind of a masochist.

There seems to be no end to his interest in learning and seeing new things, all with energy and bravado. Even though he is capable of recognizing a situation as dangerous, his main reaction to almost drowning was that they didn't manage to catch the fish they wanted, instead of being happy he's still alive.

Despite his royal upbringing, Hatchi doesn't act snobbish at all. He doesn't protest against having to wash the dishes in a restaurant, and appears to be perfectly capable of doing his own laundry, against the usual stereotype of royalty who expect servants to do everything for them. Some of it seems to be seeping through, though, as he can be seen purchasing way too many things for himself than he should rationally need for a trip that took only a bit over a week. This could hint that he simply had many things back home, but might also be part of the reason behind him usually over-packing for travel, which is a fact that he doesn't confirm or deny. Hatchi doesn't seem to be very fond of his background in general. He doesn't renounce it when confronted directly, but doesn't protest when Robby once comments that princes are never decent people, and snaps when it seems his friends might start treating him differently when they learn the truth about him. He is definitely relieved when they don't.

Hatchi also seems to have a general problem with admitting his feelings of any nature. Some things slip him only by accident when he doesn't mean to say them at all. One example was when he said the pajamas he got from Robby are now his favorite, as for a long time he left the other man thinking he considered them lame. Another even more visible instance is when he averts being questioned about the meaning of ringing the Lovely Bell on Akka Sakka. Regardless of what he actually feels and thinks of the situation, he clearly avoids the topic instead of even brushing it off as a joke. Similarly, Robby has to ask him several times before Hatchi finally admits he paid off the debt because he wanted to go to Isekandar together.

Etymology[edit]

Hatchi is named directly after one of the main characters of the original Hizakurige, Kitahachi, with whom he shares some similarities.

Both characters are the younger of the duo, though Kita is "in his twenties", roughly 23 to 24, or 29 to 30 as different parts of the story provide different information, which makes him a bit older. They are also both the stowaway following someone else. Kita is similarly enthusiastic and lively about new things.

At some point in their journey, after his own kimono was stolen and he had nothing to wear, Yaji buys him a new blue one, which turns out to be of rather poor quality. This is mirrored in the "tacky pajamas" in the same color scheme that Hatchi received when he had nothing to sleep in. In addition, while in Hizakurige it seems Kita is the one with worse luck when in RobiHachi it's Robby, there are several instances of Kita accidentally breaking something, such as the bottom of a bath falling out; him falling through a ceiling; and both him and Yaji knocking over a sliding door. This is also mirrored when Hatchi knocks over the wall in the hot springs on Haccone.

However, Kitahachi is rather mischievous and drinks a lot, whereas Hatchi doesn't drink due to being honest about being underage. He also notoriously chases skirts, even more so than Yaji, and appears to be the more perverted one of the two. Hatchi, though aware of his good looks, is only seen being flirty once when he winks at a cashier to get fresh fries for Robby on planet Two, and generally remains unbothered in this area.

Trivia[edit]

Hatchi has a hobby fighter's license, is a good swimmer, and can be a good actor when he wants to.[4] However, when he is not convinced, he will act very badly.[5]
He is scared of ghosts, as science cannot explain them.
He doesn't know how eel tastes, or didn't until visiting Hamama II, and the same is hinted about tuna. He does, however, know the taste of nitrogen.
He likes snow globes and collects souvenirs.
His annoying habits, as listed by Robby, are: taking way too long in the bathroom; using too much toilet paper; sneezing like a cat; being a miser who doesn't share things; not appreciating being given a place to sleep in and any pajamas in the first place, which is in direct reaction to Hatchi calling them lame and complaining about his bedroom; adding floral-smelling detergent to the laundry; and ordering a lot of unnecessary things online.
When Hatchi input his data into the application which suggests tourists which stage station planet they should visit basing on their personality, he was recommended a planet suitable for those who are stubborn and hide their feelings. He denies this, only further confirming this as true.
Several times during the show, Hatchi is shown cheerfully skipping away. In the film Yaji & Kita: Midnight Pilgrims (2005), Kita also skips on his way several times, with Yaji trying to join in but miserably failing at mimicking the movement, with Kita being the one to first suggest it. In addition, Kita in the film mentions how reality is boring to him, though predominantly complains how it makes no sense, which is the same reason Hatchi was fed up with his current life. It is not clear if this is an intended reference.
