Binan is a city somewhere in Japan. En Yufuin and Atsushi Kinugawa, who attend Binan High School together with Io Naruko and Ryuu Zaou, set up a club that does nothing called the "Earth Defense Club," and enjoy their high school life lazily.
One day, when En and Atsushi were relaxing in the bath at the Kurotama, a mysterious object suddenly fell into the bathtub.
As soon as the pink creature appeared, it called out to them in Japanese, "How I should like to protect this planet...would you mind helping me?"

Synopsis[edit]

The Kurotama Bath[edit]

Atsushi and En sitting in the bath, discussing chikuwabu.

En and Atsushi are relaxing in the bath as they discuss chikuwabu[1] and its purpose in oden.[2] Suddenly, a portal opens in the ceiling, and Wombat falls from it, splashing them. After Atsushi explains where they are, Wombat tells them he wants to protect the planet and asks for their help. En and Atsushi try to escape, but Wombat approaches and they cause a commotion. Yumoto Hakone enters to tell them to stop wrestling in the bath, but is enthralled by the sight of a pink wombat in the bath. This gives En and Atsushi time to escape.
Once they've exited the Kurotama in their school uniforms, they see the student council heading home. En comments that they would be the "golden trio" of oden ingredients. Once the trio passes by, Yumoto chases Wombat out of the Kurotama. Atsushi asks what oden ingredient Yumoto would be, and En replies he would be the pot.

Binan High School[edit]

School Grounds[edit]

Kazutake Chiku walks to school, narrating about how he's completely average. His theory is that people all fit into one of three categories: the beautiful, the ugly, and those who are neither; the smart, the stupid, and those who are neither; the athletic, the frail, and those who are neither. Lost in thought, he's accidentally pushed to the ground, and reveals he believes himself to be the third kind.

Classroom 3-C[edit]

Mr. Tawarayama entering the classroom.

Mr. Tawarayama enters the classroom, carrying Wombat. All the students question if their teacher is becoming senile. After everyone bows, Wombat wills the teacher to rush over to En and Atsushi, calling out and almost blowing his cover.

School Hallways[edit]

After class ends, Wombat chases En and Atsushi through the halls with their teacher, trying to get them to stop and hear him out, claiming that this second meeting must be destiny. Wombat asks them to teach him more about Earth culture, and En refuses, asking why Mr. Tawarayama can't do it. Wombat hints at Mr. Tawarayama's current state. They pass by Kazutake, who overhears En say that he has to ponder chikuwabu's purpose.
Wombat stops chasing En and Atsushi when Yumoto cuts them off, spouting more facts about wombats that he read online. Yumoto chases Wombat, causing Kazutake to fall once more. Atsushi asks if he's okay.

Club Room[edit]

En and Atsushi meet up with Io and Ryuu in their club room. The two boys are working on their respective hobbies, stocks and dates with girls. Io hands En a club registration form that was posted on their door by the student council. In order to use the room, they need to officially register as a club. Ryuu suggests the idea of an Innocent Co-Ed Mingle Club, and Io suggests they become the Economics in Practice Club. Atsushi shuts both of these down saying they go against public decency and lack in high school student character, which is what he expects the student council president to say. En suggests they settle on the Earth Defense Club, because there happens to be a wooden sign on their door that says it. Io and Ryuu then say they need at least five members and an advisor to be a legitimate club. The door opens on cue, and Mr. Tawarayama's corpse falls through, followed by Yumoto and Wombat.

School Grounds[edit]

Kazutake sits on a bench outside, unwrapping his lunch which consists of two sticks of chikuwabu on rice. A mysterious voice speaks to him, and he is struck in the neck by a green projectile. Black veins travel out from it across his skin and he screams in agony.

Club Room[edit]

Yumoto cuddling Wombat in the club room.

Yumoto continues to cuddle Wombat, and thanks everyone for frequenting the Kurotama Bath. Wombat is able to get back to Mr. Tawarayama, who springs to life. Saying it would take too long to explain, the two of them point at the ceiling and a beam comes down, creating the Lovracelets on the five boys' wrists. The bracelets buzz, and Wombat explains it's the Love Alert, before exiting the club room.

School Grounds[edit]

After a quick explanation of the Love Alert, Yumoto says Wombat's pretty smart, to which Wombat replies he's not really a wombat, but an alien. Yumoto is surprised by this. Wombat explains he has a translator, but when he tries to say his name and where he's from, it comes out as gibberish. Then, the boys notice the Chikuwabu Monster crouched in the school's courtyard. Wombat says that the five of them must transform into the Battle Lovers. The five boys' bodies start moving against their will as they are forced to say lines before their transformations.

Once transformed, they examine their outfits. Ryuu likes his outfit, while En and Atsushi find that the outfits cannot be removed. Yumoto's only issue seems to be that he doesn't feel right calling himself a prince. The Chikuwabu Monster injects himself into the conversation with an attack. He shoots hot broth at the Battle Lovers, who find that they are able to jump onto the school's roof. They summon their Love Sticks and come down from the roof, firing lazily-named beam attacks at the monster.

Wombat asks them to stop calling out random attack names, so Yumoto summons a larger Love Stick from all five sticks, and performs the Love Attack. This causes the top part of the Chikuwabu Monster's head to break off, but he doesn't want to give up. Yumoto punches him in the face, sending him flying, before giving a heartfelt speech and performing the Love Shower. Kazutake is returned to normal. Io and Ryuu note that the five of them are a mess and smell like broth, so Yumoto brings out coupons for the Kurotama Bath. He sticks one on Kazutake's forehead before following the others. Io questions why Mr. Tawarayama is carrying Wombat around, but the explanation fades out.
The student council as Caerula Adamas looks on from the roof, questioning who the Battle Lovers are. Lord Zundar walks onto Kinshirou's shoulder and says they should prepare themselves.

Quotes[edit]

En: Atsushi, you know, there's something I've been thinking about lately.

Atsushi: What is it, En-chan? The tax increase? The Olympics?

En: No, chikuwabu.
En: The student council must have it rough.
Ibushi: And you must have it easy.
Kazutake: My theory is that humans can be divided into three categories... I think.
Wombat: I want us to protect this lovable Earth with the power of love together! Why, you ask? I do it all for love!

En: No, we didn't ask.

Atsushi: Sorry, but we have other things to do.
Io: Money is...

Ryuu: Women are...

Io and Ryuu: Life!
Wombat: Now, you must "Love Making" into the Battle Lovers!
Lord Zundar: Prepare yourselves, Earth Conquest Club.

Trivia & References[edit]

En: Yet, with chikuwabu, you can boil it for hours and hours, and most of it will remain nothing but wheat flour mixed with water. It gives off the superficial appearance of melting and integrating itself while, deep down, it rejects others and denies its wheat-based origins.
The above quote from the original Crunchyroll subs contradicts itself. En says chikuwabu will remain nothing but wheat flour mixed with water, but denies its wheat-based origins. This was corrected later on.
Yumoto: A wombat! Diprotodontia Macropodidae! Cousin to the koala! They get sick if they get lonely and have flat noses! There, there! Don't struggle!
A wombat is not part of the Macropodidae family.[3] It is part of the Vombatidae family.[4]
The broadcast and streaming version of the episode places the opening credits at the end, while the BluRay/DVD release places it before the title card, with normal end credits at the end.
Yumoto: What's this? You're giving them to us? "The Wombat Returns"?
This is a reference to the Studio Ghibli film The Cat Returns.
When first shown, the Chikuwabu Monster is crouching and speaking like a delinquent. The general shape of his head also resembles a pompadour hairstyle.[5]
