Mars

Mars is the fourth planet of the Solar System, known as the Red Planet. Common belief is that Martians look like octopuses, however, in reality they are humanoid-looking and wearing octopus suits which are said to be too hot, hard to breathe in and potentially also hampering movement. This is done to attract tourists from Earth as this is considered to be Mars’s main selling point.

The confusion stems back from the first encounter between Earthlings and Martians – while now the planet is terraformed thanks to high-level technology, originally it was an inhospitable world full of deserts and with an average temperature of -65°C (-85°F). Therefore, Martians wore protective suits to allow them to survive – suits that made them resemble octopuses to newly arrived Earthlings. The news that Martians are octopuses spread widely before they could correct the mistake.
As of recent, tourism on Mars has been going through a difficult period, with the number of visitors decreasing. The Mars Tourism Bureau was intending to change that by providing more octopus-themed attractions, such as building a theme park called Takotubo Land (which is said to be vastly unpopular) with pots and towels as souvenirs and selling food like takoyaki[1] or octopus crackers[2].

After Robby and Hatchi left the planet, its marketing extensively changed, focusing instead on authentic Martian experiences. Octopus-themed attractions from before are gone, including the Takotubo Land, and instead the Mars Tourism Bureau is offering tours: Mars Adventure Experience Tour (a tour with an extreme temperature differential of -140°C to 60°C / -220°F to 140°F), Dust Devil Tour (showing powerful sandstorms), Olympus Mons Mountaineering Tour (which goes to an elevation of 25,000 metres).
Mars was visited in episode 2, talked about in drama CD 1 and briefly shown again in episode 3.

Trivia[edit]

Mars being (seemingly) inhabited by octopuses is a reference to The War of the Worlds, a book by H.G. Wells.
